Two Revolutionary Artist who influenced the American Commercial Art & Adverstisement

Jackson Pollock was an American artist and painter, born in 1912 in Cody, Wyoming. He was an abstract expressionist. He did all his painting work with different materials instead of just using brushes. He was taught by one of America’s famous painters and muralists, Thomas Hart Benton; they both studied at the Art Student League of New York. He was influenced by Benton's work "American Scene" which was reflected by mystical and dark additions Albert Ryder, Pollock admired Albert's work. Jackson Pollock has its own unique painting style looks like anyone could do it, even an untrained child, but whatever he created is a unique style that people always think of when they see a drip of paint or an action painting and this was the beginning of the concept of visualizing branding in art when artists started to own unique style of work that they became known for their work i.e. just like Pakistani Artist Sadeqain's work style, no matter how diverse he was, his signature style is the Islamic inspired calligraphic paintings, another example is Pakistani artist Jamil Naksh, he was known for his unique style of work, paintings of women and pigeons. He painted them in every single art piece he made, also after his work whoever works on motifs and objects like women and pigeons people always compare it with Jamil Naksh’s work/paintings. Jackson Pollock’s art style, his art may look random and children play but it is not, there is actually a technical system behind it and a method to it. Which is now known as branding also, functions now particularly in advertisements, that no matter what the message or product is in an advertisement. When you see it you can easily recognize it, that actually which brand is advertising. People can easily recognize the style of the advertisement, as an example all the funny advertising of Ufone for different packages and Mobilink indigo ad featuring Pakistani actor Shaan that advertisement was designed specifically for business executives, they all had a similar theme to it.

Peggy Guggenheim opened an art gallery named "Art of the Century", this art gallery plays a major role in abstract expressionist careers, getting new work opportunities for them. Art of the Century gave solo chances to many struggling abstract expressionists to showcase their work to New York. Where Pollock also got a chance to solo exhibit his work. His famous Mural 1943. Peggy liked Pollock’s work and hired him by providing him a monthly allowance, in which return he left his job as a carpenter at a museum. She wanted Pollock to paint the wall on the entrance of her hall. It turned out to be a masterpiece. Pollock's work shows movement, life, emotions. Pollock's work travels the world through Peggy's donation of Pollock's work to various Institutions. Pollock developed the combination of both radical and modern art into abstract style and pictorial spaces.

Mark Rothko was an American painter, he was born on September 25, 1903, in Dvinsk, Russian Empire, he worked on various genres of art such as Abstract expressionism, Surrealism, Color field painting, the sublime in art. He was one of the prominent painters among the New York School painters. Mark Rothko moved through many artistic styles until he reached his signature style in 1950s figurative work to abstract expression, shapes with monochromatic colors. His work was highly influenced by spirituality, mythology, and philosophy. He expressed his feelings, emotions through his work, he was insistent that his art was filled with brimming ideas and content. Rothko was fierce and understood the basic right of self-expression he addressed in the various essays and critical reviews. He always displayed his youth through the social revolutionary ideas from his youth throughout his life. Some of his famous works include; Crucifixion (1935), Entrance to Subway (1938), Oedipus (1944), No. 9 (1947), The Rothko Chapel (1965). His most famous unique painting is Black on Maroon completed in 1958 it was actually one of the series paintings he painted a mural for the restaurant, the Four seasons situated in the Seagram Building, Park Avenue, New York. It was actually an unframed painting with colors deeply and well blended.

The man who changed the design world, Saul bass was a great storyteller, typography artist, graphic designer. He was born in New York in 1920, he got a great chance to study under Gyorgy Kepes, Kepes was the master of functional Bauhaus aesthetic. His famous works are such good friends, psycho, exodus, the man with a golden hand. Madman's intro was also inspired by his work. In the 1940s, Bass came to California for his first major advertising break, he designed a poster in 1954 for the film Carmen Jones. That was the big time when he started getting noticed because the filmmakers were impressed by his work and then he started doing his magic because filmmakers invited him to design the title credits as well and this decision made wonders. Bass’s initial works are Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Love in the Afternoon (1957). In his title credits work, we can clearly see the sequence, the tone he sets in it, which gives the audience as essences of what's coming their way in the movie. The logos he made are logos that lasted more than 34 years and some are yet to be replaced. His extremely tremendous work of logos includes Kosé Cosmetics (1959), Kibun (1964), Warner Communications (1972), Girl Scouts (1978).

Paul Rand, conquered the advertisement and the corporate designing world, he worked, taught, published. His real name was Peretz Rosenbaum, he changed his name because of his Jewish background. Paul Rand is a legend that changed the graphic design world throughout his career, he changed the opinions of people regarding visual communication. These are some of the many reasons why Paul Rand is the most famous artist in the design industry and many designers look up to him as inspiration. He worked at GQ magazine as a graphic designer at the young age of 23. He cracked the code and made a combination of visual art and commercial design. Paul's style still has an impact on graphic design nowadays. His renowned works for large companies include IBM, AIGA, Ab, Next logo for Steve Jobs. He published four books named Design form and chaos, Thoughts on design, A designer's art, From Lascaux to Brooklyn. He helped transform the advertising industry, he made people realize the importance of graphic design and typography. He was inspired by European modernism, abstract composition of pictures, and typography. He once stated modernism as honesty, simplicity, clarity. He was known as the Father of American branding.



The artist who turned advertisement into art, Andy Warhol, his original name is Andrew Warhola born on August 6, 1928, in Pennsylvania. He was an American artist and filmmaker turned designer. His art style was the print style using pop art. He graduated in pictorial design from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1948, Pittsburgh. He went to New York to work as a commercial illustrator. He began painting around the late 1950s. He started getting noticed by people around 1962, where he exhibited Campbell's soup cans, Coca-cola bottles. In 1963 he started banal pictorial mass-producing making portraits of celebrities in garish shades. With his work of repeated icons, he emphasizes the American material culture and the artist's lack of emotional connection with his work. He was placed at the forefront of emerging Pop art. He was more devoted to filmmaking, his films were a motion picture, as The Chelsea Girls (1966), Lupe (1966) and more.

In American commercial art and advertising, Paul Rand is a legend that changed the graphic design world throughout his career, he changed the opinions of people regarding visual communication. These are some of the many reasons why Paul Rand is the most famous artist in the design industry and many designers look up to him as inspiration. The man who changed the design world, Saul Bass and Jackson Pollock was the influencer who introduced branding in the ad industry, also Pollock's work was highly calculated and large-sized. The scale of visual imagery had an impact on animation, on the high budget in films, and on higher budgets in advertising, it was a lot about showmanship and it was actually collaborative, a lot of people were involved in the creation of films animation, and hence advertising. The idea that America's free country was actually taken from the freedom of the American artists and pushed into advertising. American advertisement was creative and free and different from the closed controlled media of the communist countries of that time. Art was directly being used by politicians and government now as a tool, and being promoted through advertising keep in mind advertising also had a purpose to change people's mind and this is what was being done by the USA, that advertisement was being used to change people's minds about the USA around the world, by portraying Americans as the real free people.
